Violife Prosociano Review, by The Gourmet Vegan

I have mentioned in my accompanying recipe post that when Violife asked me if I would like to try and review the latest addition to their product range, I jumped at the chance. As a home cook and recipe developer I love to use new and exciting ingredients in my recipes, and when there’s a chance to use a vegan alternative to a non-vegan product, the excitement just grows.

Say hello to Violife Prosociano!

Prosociano is a vegan alternative to Parmesan cheese and you get the sense of that immediately from the packaging, which I personally thought gave the product a very classy look. On opening the packaging, the first thing that hit me was the aroma; the aroma of Parmesan cheese. For anyone that remembers that smell, then this smells exactly the same. And then the initial taste test. Boom! “They’ve done it again”, I shout from the kitchen to my partner who comes rushing in to see what I’m doing.

“done what?”, comes the reply.

“Taste this!”, I say.

“what? It just tastes like real Parmesan”….

And that was the reply before my partner was aware that it was a vegan alternative. I think that basically sums up the taste test and so then it was down to the cooking.

I couldn’t wait to develop a recipe before tasting it with a meal and so I decided that the quickest and simplest way try it with would be with a spaghetti Bolognese. Grating the product over the rich tomato sauce was something I never thought I would do again. In my pre-vegan days, I used to use Parmesan on a regular basis, and as I grated it over and took my first bite, I think I had a bit of a spiritual moment. Heavenly, seriously heavenly. But now what to cook with it? Well, it didn’t actually take me that long to think of the recipe I wanted to make. In my pre-vegan days when still vegetarian, quiches and tarts were always on my menu, and cheese and broccoli tart has always been one of my favourites. The ingredient that made all the difference to that dish was the use of good quality parmesan, and now I had the perfect alternative.

And here you have it – My Vegan Parmesan and Broccoli Tart

Is this recipe as good as the one I used to make? No! It’s better…

Once again, Violife have come up with another gem of a product that will become a new staple to my store cupboard (Refrigerator) ingredients.
